Our providers at Conyers Endodontic Center of Conyers, Georgia, provide a selection of services, including oral surgeries and root canals. While root canals are often successful and allow our team to save a tooth from permanent extraction, there are times when failed root canals may happen. At this point, patients may be in need of root canal retreatment, also referred to as endodontic retreatment.
Root canal retreatment is a procedure that involves removing the previous root canal filling and any infected or damaged tissues from within the tooth. This may be necessary if the initial root canal did not fully clear out all of the infection or if a new infection has developed since the first treatment. In some cases, retreatment may also be needed due to additional canals being discovered in the tooth that were not addressed during the initial root canal procedure.
Some of the more common symptoms that may indicate a need for root canal retreatment include persistent pain or discomfort in the treated tooth, swelling, tenderness, or sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. In some cases, patients may also experience a recurring abscess at the base of the tooth or notice a change in the color of the tooth.
The first step of root canal retreatment is typically removing any existing filling material from the tooth. This allows our team to clean and disinfect the canals thoroughly once again. If necessary, we may also use advanced techniques such as microscopic technology to ensure that all infection is addressed before sealing the tooth.
Our endodontists are here to address a wide range of issues, ensuring patients have the care and attention they need to address common issues. If you have had a failed root canal treatment and need retreatment, we can assist!
