What are the primary causes of tooth pain?

At Conyers Endodontic Center of Conyers, Georgia, our endodontists often see patients referred to the office due to toothaches. But what causes these to occur, and what can be done about it?

Causes of toothaches

There are many reasons why a patient might experience tooth pain. Some of the most common causes include:

• Tooth decay. When bacteria present in the mouth produce acid that eats away at the natural enamel, it often leads to cavities and tooth decay. This results in both pain and sensitivity in the affected tooth
• Gum disease. If left without proper treatment, gum disease can cause inflammation and infection around the teeth, leading to tooth pain and sensitivity
• Tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is described as a pocket of pus that forms around the bottom or root of an infected tooth, causing severe pain
• Cracked/broken teeth. If a tooth becomes broken, it exposes the sensitive inner areas of the tooth, leading to pain and sensitivity
• Bruxism (teeth grinding). Chronic teeth grinding wears down the enamel and causes sensitivity or pain in the teeth
• Dental procedures. Some patients may experience temporary tooth pain after undergoing a dental procedure such as a root canal or filling

Treatment options for toothaches

The treatment for a patient’s toothache will depend on the underlying cause of the pain. For example, if it is due to a cavity, a filling may be recommended by your primary dentist. In some situations, root canal therapy from our endodontic team might be the best treatment option. If the pain is caused by periodontal disease, treatment might involve deep cleaning procedures such as scaling and root planing or the application of antibiotics.

In cases of tooth abscess, the infected area may need to be drained and a course of antibiotics prescribed. For cracked or broken teeth, dental procedures such as bonding or crowns may be necessary to repair the damage.
